Jessica Grammer: I'm not one to give up meat, so this is purely from the perpective of someone who likes meat and is keeping it in their diet, but also has moments where ground beef is just too expensive. I'm a texture eater primarily, and that's usually what puts me off a lot of plant-based foods - there's just something off.

I saw a TikTok that had this in it, and I admit I was curious. It was on sale, I picked it up, and while I'd initially planned to use it in spagetti sauce, I was whimsically attracted to the idea of shepherd's pie one night and figured we'd go for it.

I'll warn that it seemed a little peppery on it's own, but if you'd handed the meal to me and not said a thing? I'd have never guessed it wasn't meat. It soaks up the flavor of sauces and spices really well, and it was an enjoyable eat. I'll be picking up more, because ground beef is just too much at times, and this really worked out!

Dave and/or Kat: We are not vegetarian or vegan, I just don't like cooking meat. This crumble is perfect for me, it's quick and simple to make tasty tacos. I always add a lot of taco seasoning (while I cook it on the stove) and it makes for a quick and easy dinner that we both love. I also saute onions and bell peppers and add them in at the end for extra flavor (and veggies). I've tried other meat-less crumbles that just grossed me out while cooking (I think it was the smell). While this product may not be particularly aromatic, I prefer that. It takes on the taste of the seasonings you put in it and has the right consistency for ground beef, so it works great for us.

Sue Sew: I only got around to trying this brand of faux beef crumble today. I am around a 70% lacto-vegetarian for most of my adult life. Having found that the ethically-sourced bison meat I had purchased a while ago was expired and wanting a comforting childhood dish requiring ground beef, I had this in the freezer. I put in a generous amount of olive oil into the pan, dumped half a package in and was greeted with no aroma whatsoever (not necessarily bad) Oh my did this soak up that oil. Added more oil. Added more oil before I said enough and just dumped in tomato paste and water and stirred like crazy. I can say i did add my own seasoning just garlic and onion and only finishing salt. My there is definitely pepper in this. But otherwise it is totally neutral like tofu. No real flavor of its own and should certainly absorb any flavored liquid. I can see how it could fool strictly carnivore types in a dish requiring ground meat (lasagna?) Not bad and not terribly expensive considering costs today of especially meat and quality vegetarian product. Be prepared for it to need a lot of liquid seasoning. Keyword: liquid for it to absorb flavor. It is very dry.
