Richard B Long: I was looking for a definitive book on growing vines so I could block out all the noise that is out there and just use one tried and trusted method. The book is written well, easy to read, has great diagrams but unfortunately for me is ultimately not ideal as everything is based around the northeast (Virgina and north) climates. I would have given five stars if this author had not (rather snobbishly) denigrated vine growers further south in NC, SC and Georgia, where I have tasted some excellent wines from some great Vineyards.
I started my own small vineyard on some land at my home in piedmont of NC. This is a compararively small, not commercial, affair which does make a difference.
I found the section on pruning and training to be very informative. This was an area that was confusing to me. It just seems like the terminology used by different people is confusing and even within this book I went HUH? a few times. For example the first diagram on pruning says let assume this is the first years growth and the diagram accompanying it had second year and older growth shown on it.
The chapter on pest management was very good. This is another area with a myriad of...

Ryan: I have not read through it all but the level of detail and information seems very well done. I have a few vines I am planting this year and hopefully a bunch more next year and this book is and will be a great tool in the process

Bayview: Not a bad little introductory book, but the focus is on to the USA and different grapes and pruning techniques relevant to that country. Further north many of those pages are of little practical value.

Rebecca H.: Got this for a gift for my husband who is starting off our own little vineyard. It was highly recommended on a few different sites and so far he loves it! It is a great comprehensive starter book for us.

John Thomsen: A very good starting point for people wanting to grow grapes and make their own wine. Not a professional reference manual but a solid start for many new growers. Also comes periodically updated which helps Jeff sell more current books. All together a worth while investment.

RigelRigel: This book is supremely well written. The step by step instructions actually give me a hint of confidence to try and develop a vineyard on my 5 acres. So far im planning to plant only 2 acres but I've been overwhelmed by the process. This book helps me feel educated in the proper workflow required to take on a project like this. Now the hard part. What varietals to plant and how much of each. Also need to find some professional help. With the appendices and references stated in this book finding help will be much easier. All I can say to Jeff Cox is thank you for providing a treasure trove of info at such a slight cost. The read itself is payback enough for what the book cost. The info in here is priceless. I hope you are getting $50 a book for use as a college text.

math person: Best I have seen on pruning. All other books I have looked at throw words at you without explaining what each refers to. This one not only says what the technical words are, but also gives drawings. Some reviews complain that not all pruning systems are covered. If you are growing a few vines in your back yard, this book will do you just fine. If you are growing commercially, you should be consulting local government agencies. But even then, you might find this book will help you understand the more advanced or up to date advice.
