REG: I bought this a year ago for a living edge unsealed walnut dining room table. Had never used oils before, did a bunch of research, bought this. Used it for a year, which was a largely miserable experience. The oil was smelly, took forever to dry, and left my table unevenly sealed, with some areas that stayed sticky no matter how much I buffed and some that looked dark and matte. But, I thought, this must be what having an unsealed table is like. And I felt virtuous for taking care of my lovely table, even though it wasn't a lot of fun. And I'd have ot leave the doors open over night to avoid a getting a headache.

AND THEN ONE DAY EVERYTHING CHANGED. A friend had a nice butcher block counter in his kitchen and I asked him what he used. Food grade mineral oil, he said. Oh, I said, I use tung oil, feeling smug and a little superior. Ugh, he said I tried that but it was smelly and sticky and didn't really seal. So I like this much better, he said.

I went home and tried mineral oil on my precious table and OH MY GOD. It was a dream. Went on smoothly, no smell at all, absorbed overnight and now my table is evenly lustrous, you can't see white traces if you scratch it...

Matt Atkinson: I bought this to seal butcher block countertop. I tried some mineral oil based product butcher block sealer but it was not waterproof at all and it was full of xylene and cancer warnings on the labels. I let it dry outside.

We needed something that did not need to dry outdoors because of harmful chemicals.
I rubbed only 1 coat of this and let dry overnight. It provides a waterproof finish, water beads up on the surface. The odor while it was drying was faint sesame/peanut smell. No flammable cancer causing fumes.
Still have a lot left over and will do another coat for improved water resistance.

I read a lot of reviews that were kind of mixed and confusing. This will darken the wood a little bit, that was not important to me. I just wanted waterproof and no harmful chemicals.

Highly recommend to anyone.

John McJohn Mc: This is a great product for the home woodworker/painter. I found it easy to use once I read and understood the directions. I recommend checking the website as well.

I did 3 coats over 2 days to my newly built redwood table and couldn’t be happier. The 1st coat I cut 50% with turpentine, the 2nd with about 20% turpentine and the final was pure tung oil. For each coat I let it soak in for 45 minutes then wiped it off.

Over the next 3 days I also wiped off any excess oil that had come to the surface, although it was negligible after the 2nd day.
Now the table has a rich, warm finish and I believe it will stand up to the light rains we get in out area over the winter.

Give this stuff a shot and avoid the Home Depot junk that just clogs the wood and makes it feel greasy.

Dmitriy B.: I've never used this thing before and bought it to restore my wife's swing. It was a present from her grandma and she really wants to keep it as a keepsake to remember her granny by. It's been sitting in the backyard over three years got numerous dry cracks, dry-rot and just unkempt spots, and overall looked really beat-up to a point my wife started to think that it was time for it to go. The all-knowing internet in its wisdom provided some restoration tips; after some grinding, sanding, polishing, I applied an entire bottle of lemon-based oil, let it soak in, sanded the wood again, and then used the Tung oil to seal it. Warning: use gloves and some sheeting, also definitely do this in well-ventilated area. I used about quarter of a bottle for two coats, let the swing sit outside in the sun for about 12 hours and brought it in. Can't tell that the cracks were gone, but they got really small, I was also able to tighten all the screws and bolts, since the wood swell and became more robust. The swing is now steady and well. I bet if I get it stained and sealed it will be good as new. Fair warning, the spills are hard to clean; it won't come off my driveway and now the spillage spots...

Brent Dyer: I'm using this to finish a walnut bed that I am building. Without having to stain, dye, or grain-fill, I've gotten beautiful results.

Some reviews fault it for being "slow drying," and some even claim that months later it is still wet. Yes, it does take time for it to dry. That is an inherent feature of tung oil. But if it is still feeling "wet" or oily after more than a few days (a week tops), you are probably using to much, improperly applying, or both.

As the product's directions clearly state, the best way to apply is by sanding. I start by wiping on enough to cover the surface and then sand the entire application with 220-grit wet/dry sandpaper. After sanding, I wipe off the excess oil and let dry for a day or so. The next application, I use 320-grit. For the third application, I move up to 4xx-grit.

After letting the piece dry for several days, it has a stable, beautiful finish. It is somewhat labor intensive, but the result are well worth it, especially at this great price.
