Sandra Ryan: Excellent jounalistic investigation of the horrific consequence of rino and elephant poaching in the South African region...frightening consequences with a total lock of resources to deal with the issue.

susan nuttall: Huge amount of research done in this book - exposes many facets of corruption and greed in the countries where the few remaining vestiges of wildlife can be found - especially in Africa and South Africa where the rhino's still cling to survival.
Extremely depressing that the mass of poulation in China and Vietnam fervently believe that wild animal products have magic properties which will be able to fix their miserable human lives.
Having been to both countries and seen how they view wildlife as just a commodity to be exploited, bodes disaster in the future
and the total extinction of many species over the next 20 - 50 years.
When political figures and criminal leaders are in cahoots where there are huge sums of money to be made, there seems to be no hope of stopping killing for profit.

Sibel Hodge: This book is a thorough and devastating read into research about the illegal trafficking of rhino and its consequences. It's a hard-hitting, gritty book that will make you cry in places, but if we don't cry about this, then we're inhuman.
More than 1 rhino is killed in Africa every day. Rhinos are being butchered while they're was still alive, horns brutally hacked off and left to die painfully. And for what? Rhino horn is made of keratin, the same substance that's found in your hair and fingernails and has no proven scientific medical benefits. Every year, thousands of wild animals are killed because someone, somewhere wants a piece of them. We have the fur trade, Eastern medicine, hunting for fun or sport, deforestation and loss of habitat due to an increase in human population and wars, or we keep them as pets. We're either killing them for selfish gain or loving them to death.
Change has to start with awareness, prevention, conservation, and protection. In some countries even the politicians and diplomats admit to being an end user in the illegal wildlife trade, claiming that rhino horn, ivory, tiger bones, or other animal products cure everything from hangovers...

sherrygazz: Although I already knew something about rhino poaching having visited several game reserves in South Africa in recent years, this book really exposes the horror of the situation and gives an insight into how complex it really is. It shows that so many people are involved on so many levels that, even though there are others fighting hard against it, it would seem to be a very hard battle to win. The book is well-researched and covers many aspects of the problem over several decades, showing the chain of those involved, from the poachers themselves, through people with diplomatic immunity who can smuggle horn without question, to the end users and showing their total disregard for the welfare of the rhino. The same names appear time and time again and yet very little seems to happen to these people. It made me very sad but also very angry that so many people are willing to kill such a majestic creature for their own financial gain. This is a book that will appeal to anyone interested in wildlife conservation and will hopefully raise awareness of a problem that seems to be less publicised on a global scale than others. At the time of writing the numbers are up to more than 2 rhino...

Bonny Wright: For the first time, as a result of reading this book, I have a clearer understanding of the pressures driving the corrupt trade in rhino horn, ivory, and other endangered species. This book explains, in a clear, roughly chronological fashion, the explosion in rhino slaughter in Africa -after the Vietnamese and Chinese demand has already resulted in the extinction of the native Asian rhino. Make no mistake - the present poaching rates are unsustainable, are supported by the "legal" hunting permits sold by corrupt government officials in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, etc. and will allow for the senseless demand in Vietnam and China to cause the extinction of the African rhino and elephant as well. An important book which does a great job exposing the trade in endangered species.

Newly converted: Not a book that can be read either straight through, or as "only book on the go". There are so many (horrifying, thought-provoking) facts and figures that one needs to digest, that it's a book you need to be able to read - then put down - absorb - and the pick up again. Truly an amazing piece of work by Julian Rademeyer

Andrew Barlow: The attitude of most people about this sort of problem is dictated mainly by sentiment and emotion. That is quite natural and there is nothing wrong with that. This book takes the reader beyond that. It makes quite clear how involved and difficult the problem is. That there is no easy solution is quite clear once the book has been read. It is then also quite clear that no country where Rhino are found can possibly solve the problem on its own. It will need some very hard thinking and action by all the parties involved. The books should be required reading for every person who is interested in the preservation of wild life and especially of all members of governments and officials where the preservation of wild life is in any way at all difficult.

gadfly: My G-d, they even have photos of these people. should be a Capital Crime. Must have book on How to end this horrible thing from happening. Why does a 1 % get control over the rest of us. I love the au and how he handled writing about this. He is also on fb. Join his sight. But my reaction is I want to do more.
Also made me aware of what is happening to Zebra. If you have a family member who cares about animals this is a MUST. But it is a reality book,
not for those who collect stuffed animals.
