Christopher J. Wilson: Pages are clean. The binding was dried out and the cover fell off. Easily fixed with some Elmer's glue.
Enjoying seeing what an amazing feat building the canal was. Looking forward to seeing the canal soon 😁

Lecrenb: I perused this book while sailing through the canal, and found the pictures very informative in explaining what I was looking at as we passed through. It brought home the scope and magnitude of the effort required to build this modern day wonder of the world.
The author lets the pictures do the talking, but I felt an amplified text would have brought further historic content, especially if the reader is not actually at the canal!

Rhonda H: I highly recommend you listen to the audio version of this book, as I think it would be tedious to read. Excellent narration - I felt like I was actually experiencing it! He is almost poetic in his detailed descriptions and the author obviously did a tremendous amount of research. It is very historical, and has countless quotes from people involved in building the canal throughout the period, read in their own accents. I have been so fascinated by the details that I am listening for a second time! I also bought a wonderful book of photography that really brought it all to light - "The Building of the Panama Canal in Historic Photographs" by Ulrich Keller. I wish I had learned all this before going through the Canal!

Omar Mitchell: Spectacularly clear and detailed pictures of a civil engineering endeavor that for obvious reasons ought not to have been possible to construct.
We are demonstratively shows how the combine power of machinery and man's determination can achieve. To mechanical engineer its a manifested proof of the power of steam.
It should be shown at the very first start of engineering classes in all universities.

salemone: Book was very meaningful, as I only recently fulfilled a long-held dream of making the full transit. This is an excellent collection of photos showing canal construction, as well as everyday life for those involved.. Politics aside, I feel great respect and appreciation for those visionaries, including Teddy Roosevelt, as well as those who toiled under difficult conditions, to make it all happen.
A personal note: Enjoyed a delightful cruise feature, in the person of a talented actor who maintained TR's persona, both on and off stage. I think he compared quite favorably to Hal Holbrook's magnificent Mark Twain.

Dereck Cross: Having just cruised the Psnama Canal, I saw this book on sale on board the cruise ship and wanted it. Rather than pay more for it and have the extra weight travelling back I waited to buy it on Amazon when I got home. Excellent book/photographic detail

John V. Gass: A truly amazing narrative of forty years of history between the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 and the start of the First World War, not only of Panama, but of France, the USA and others.
I tend not to reread books but this one I did. I only realized the value of it's content after the first reading. It is so well written the first reading went too fast.
I would strongly recommend that readers considering this book first read Zachary Karabell's "Parting the Desert - The Creation of the Suez Canal"
