Angel: This book is a real eye opener. It forces you to examine the dynamics associated with language and how it is representive of history and the carrying on of traditions. It also makes you mindful of the ways in which language can be inclusive and exclusive. It shows you how the language we choose to write in/ speak can be a source of pride and power or a form of control and weakness. It also displays ways in which our creativity may be accredited to and readable to cultures outside of our own. Such export of intellectual property, ideals and artistry while still useful, educational and/ or entertaing should be expressed in our mother tongues for the enrichment of our fellow natives foremost (any later translation is awesome). It just makes sense to tell our stories in our mother tongues first.

kirtida gautam: "Language, any language, has a dual characteristic: it is both a means of communication and a carrier of culture."
~ Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o

This is by far the best non-fiction book I have read in 2020. In no uncertain terms, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o describes how language erosion has been used as a political weapon against colonized civilizations.
