antonia: A beautiful narrative about tough times and tough people. I really enjoyed the personal narrative and grounds-eye perspective on fracking. One really got a sense of the time, the place, the nuance of semi-rural Pennsylvania. The details of the story are beautifully drawn; I find myself coming back to little elements such as details about the farm animals over and over in my mind. Highly recommended.

Tracy Miller: This book really details how peoples lives don't matter when against corporate greed. It's well written, and I found the information to be a pretty accurate account of events. You see, my fiance is the unfortunate person to have bought the house closest to this particular well the story is written about, and in the direct downhill path of the contamination. So needless to say, his spring is compromised and we no longer drink the water or even use it to brush our teeth anymore. However, we still have to bathe and wash our clothing and dishes in it because Range refuses to provide water to us like they do for the Voyles and all of the other neighbors on the road. Most likely because by the time we asked, they were in the middle of a lawsuit with the neighbors. And so by agreeing to provide us with clean drinking water would've been an admittance from them that they didn't believe the water was ok. It all came down to our lives, or their own financial gain. To clarify, he was NOT told about any of this when he bought the house almost 5 years ago. It wasn't until later after he and his daughter moved in that any of this made known to us. When the Voyles finally filled him in with what...

Antonio Andriollo: THIS READING WAS AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE BUT A VERY SAD EXAMPLE ON HOW LITTLE HELP ONE CAN GET FROM THOSE AUTHORITIES AND ADMINISTRATIONS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT EVERY CITIZEN FROM THE ARROGANCE OF BUSINESS AND MONEY .

DEEP: A very original book combining the pathos of people affected by the fracking with the political landscape of energy lobby. A thought provoking read...

drinking tea with mittens on: born and raised in montana, i've always been pro-environment. my father and i would argue big industry and mining. dad was all for "jobs" and i was (and am) for planet earth and the humans who populate it. montana has a deep history where industry raped the earth, the CEOs left the state with their pockets full of gold and left the clean-up for the residents of montana. this state is filled with superfund sites. so what does this have to do with fracking in PA?

everything.

i see why this book won the pulitzer and thanks to that award, i became aware of this book. i read it in two days. i would have read it in one day but i work for a living and had to leave the book at home in between readings. what happens when we dangle "jobs" or "money" in front of people? at what price will we leap for those tangible items? apparently we leap for those things even though arsenic can end up in an innocent boy's body. we leap for those things even though families lose their homes because they cannot breathe the air or drink the water. apparently we are okay with watching a single mother with two kids move into a camper parked in front of her parents' home rather than expose her...

Climate Hawk: I want to correct the record....Troy Jordan was not an EPACID agent. He was an inspector for the EPA RCRA program. He had expertise in oil and gas wells having worked in Oklahoma, but he was NOT a CID agent. I too was disheartened when he left to work for Chesapeake Energy, but thar's the way it goes. He was very concerned that among other things theState of PA would allow a gas well to be constructed within feet of a day care facility, among other things. So, his heart was in the work, trust me. To my knowledge no EPACID agent went to work for any gas drilling company. I will correct more records as I continue to read this book. Oh and another thing, hydrofracturing or fracking was a new process and the science had not caught up with the technology at the time the book was written. Gas drilling was largely the responsibility of the State, in this case PA. So, to investigate and hold someone or a company criminally liable was next to impossible. The statutes and regulations did not exist. So yes, CID agents came and went because there was so little they could do to make things whole. My heart goes out to the landowners as they got wholly screwed over.
