Carol Montgomery: This book was a bit different from others I have read - I quite enjoyed it

KA Wright: An excellent addition to the Arcane Series.

Adelaide is a social reformer that ha a paranormal affinity for dreamlight.
Griffin is a crime lord who is affected by a family curse and needs Adelaide to help reverse the affects before he goes mad.

I love the addition of the Burning Lamp and the secrets of Nicholas Winters. The introduction of the Sweetwater clan was a great surprise. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.

Doreen Frenette: This is another good read from Amanda Quick. The characters always match the story lines so well. Can't wait for the next instalment.

Amazon Customer: I just adore the Arcane Society series and this is no exception. It's the first one with the Burning Lamp, and sets the scene for the next 2, which are Fired Up - a modern day story in her Jayne Ann Krentz persona, and Midnight Crystal - ser on Harmony written in her Jayne Castle alter ego. All Great Books.

Mrs. P. Webb: This was one book in a trilogy by Jayne Anne Krentz. I found the order of the trilogy slightly off, but as far as her books go, I enjoyed it.

Mrs Miller: Having read the beginning of the book as an excerpt in the previous one, I wasn't sure whether I was going to enjoy this one. Amanda Quick's writing is very different from Jayne Ann Krentz's and the previous book was a in a modern setting. I bought the book because I wanted to follow the Burning Lamp series.

This book is a precursor to Fired Up, as it is set in Victorian times. Crime lord Griffin Winters is the first ancestor of Nicholas Winters to show symptoms of the cerberus curse. Adelaide Pyne is a social reformist and comes to the attention of Griffin as a result of her brothel raiding. Both she and Griffin have mysterious pasts, which are gradually revealed as you go through the book. The interaction is superb, and the characters very endearing. Old friends including Lucinda and Caleb Jones (The Perfect Poison) turn up, and the ending was very clever, a neat solution to a tricky problem. The last book in the series is Midnight Crystal, set in the futuristic world of Harmony.

Isabelle Jolly: This book is in the Victorian era, the second book of a trilogy inside the Arcane Society series!

Adelaide Pyne was 15 when her parents died. Her parents had been members of the Arcane Society, (created to study psychic powers), and she can read dreamlight. The man who controlled her inheritance told her he was sending her to an orphanage for young ladies. Instead, he sold her to a brothel and stole the money! She escaped from the brothel with a lamp a 'customer' had brought to her room, still a virgin, and went to America. Years later, she felt compelled to return to England, and has spent her time rescuing girls from brothels. She is known only as 'The Widow', dresses in mourning, and keeps her face veiled. She creates new identities for them and has set up an academy to teach them a trade.

Griffin Winters, also a teenager when his Arcane Society parents were murdered, took to the streets and became a crime lord. As he did not deal in prostitution, Adelaide had not encountered him. He, however, had been tracking her and discovered that she could read dreamlight. He has been desperately searching for the lamp and a dreamlight reader as he has turned 36 and is having...

A Book a Day: I absolutely love Amanda Quick's arcane society novels and with the Burning Lamp, she finds a way to introduce uniqueness and novelty to the new characters, but overall, it doesn't quite have the magic, wit, and tension that makes her novels so great. The story follows a new bloodline in the Arcane mythos, that of Nicholas Winters, who was the arch enemy of Sylvester Jones centuries back when the two were obsessed with trying to enhance their own powers. In Nicholas Winter's attempts, he created a curse on his descendants for which madness is inevitable, unless they can find a woman to manipulate the powers of a device known as the Burning Lamp. One such woman is Adelaide Pyne.

After the early death of her parents, a terrified fifteen year old Adelaid is spirited away to a school for young orphans, only to find that said school is actually a brothel. A man by the name of Mr. Smith with dark powers has arranged to have Adelaide in some sort of perverse sexual ceremony that will enhance his abilities. Adelaide manages to escape, steals a strange artifact from Mr. Smith, and flees to America. Thirteen years later, after working in carnivals and sideshows, while making wise...
