A. Jensen: I bought the original book in late 1997 after being diagnosed for type 1 diabetes in July of 1997. It, to put it lightly, was a life changer, and a life saver. Dr. Bernstein's methods were so different from all the "educators" I had the "pleasure" of dealing with after my diagnosis. Still, to this day, do I rarely meet a Doctor who would put me through all the tests, and show me how to eat and manage my diabetes for normal blood sugars. The information on how the body works should be taught to every school age child in the USA. This information would go a long way to mitigating the obesity epidemic in our country. IMHO. If you know what the pancreas does, and the role of insulin in fat building in the body, then you understand all you need to know to cut the fat, and build the lean.
I've explained this to i don't know how many people over the last 26 years, and have rarely found any who would take it to heart, and do what is necessary to lose the fat, and get in shape. Most will just talk about it, and forget it soon afterward. Even the other type 1's I've been fortunate to meet in person, will balk at this routine. It is not easy, but the rewards are astronomical.
Highly...

Paul Freeth: I've been a Type 1 Diabetic for 28 years and have controlled my blood sugars up until now by balancing carbohydrate intake with short acting Insulin. My HbA1C reading at check up, I have been told, since diagnosis have been good but in order to achieve this using some high carbohydrate foods is nigh on impossible with any consistency and even if you can do it, you will only do it with large spikes in your blood sugars. In the long run this leads to complications. I decided to give a low carb, high protein diet a go and immediately felt the benefits, recording controlled blood sugars within my achievable range circa currently 95% of the time. With average blood glucose falling to circa 6.5% (I now know this will go lower with time) I bought Dr Bernstein's book to improve my understanding of how a low carb diet will help and to understand what sort of balanced diet to build to help my condition. Dr Bernstein does a great job of explaining the basics and why what you eat will impact your blood sugars. If you are serious about controlling your Diabetes, then this is a must read book. If you follow its wisdom closely, you will find most of the answers needed to help control your blood...

Pro-Humanist FREELOVER: I have Insulinitis (a condition commonly referred to
as type 1 diabetes). I've had it for over 55 years,
since age 5, and provide the following so you can
understand my review (from the standpoint of my med-
ical condition status which Dr. Bernstein purports
to supply a solution for).

- - -
Weight / Glucose Level / Insulin / Carb Information
o Weight 150 lbs, 5 foot 7 inches
o HbA1c level of 5.6 for the last 9 months
o 3% below 70 mg/dl and 1% above 180 mg/dl
May 14 to June 13, 2016 (per CGM)
o Insulin pumped, typically close to 30 units/day
o Carb ingestion varies (typically, < 200 grams,
but sometimes in the 200s or 300s)
- - -

I found the Dr. Bernstein approach to

o fixating on carb food avoidance, a long list of
foods which one cannot eat or drink,

o as well as his book's abundant use of diabetes and
diabetic words without clarifier (making it diffi-
cult to know which one or if some or all of the
disparate High Glucose Conditions were actually be-
ing referred to each time he used those outdated
and confusing words),

o as well as his dismissal of insulin pumps and...

Qtip: As a type 2 diabetic for a number of years, I have tended to get Dietry information from different sources that always conflict with each other! it completely drives you mad. I also take a number of tablets each day.
This book has shown me that I can control my blood sugar levels with the guidance suggested.
I have informed and discussed with my GP that I shall be starting to follow the new dietry rules in the new year, and will keep
him upto date.
Please note that this dietry system is fairly radical to say the least, compared to current convention,
so you MUST make sure you discuss and keep your GP informed at all times if you mean to start this system
For me it was an eye opener.

I thought an update to my previous comments above might be useful.23/09/2013.
I have been on the diet / program as in the book for approx. 7 months.
Whilst I was fortunate not to be overweight in the first place, I lost 21 lbs in 7 weeks, my BMI is now 21.77 which I am happy with.
I can control my weight comfortably at about +/- 1 lb per week.
My blood sugars I can control comfortably at +/- 0.5 per week. I test once daily and chart all the figures per week.
My...

TheEditor: I weighed 268, a diagnosed Type II when I first got this book. My doctor wanted to put me on medication. I asked him If I could try diet and exercise first. He reluctantly gave me 6 months. I never looked back. If I had followed my Dr. and the American Diabetes Association, I would still be taxing my pancreas to the max and shooting insulin to compensate for poisoning myself. But fate stepped in and I read this book. I learned how not to eat things that kill me and to avoid any medication whatsoever. (Note, some diabetics may be too far gone to accomplish this, as Dr. Bernstein notes in his book, but for the vast majority, newly diagnosed type IIs can learn to stop poisoning themselves and avoid medication. Even if you have to take medication or insulin, this book will help you to lower the dosages if not get off of them altogether).

I lost 61 pounds in one year, went from a size 48 waist to a 38 and feel like a million bucks. I have never had to take medication. When I went back in 6 months, my A1C was out of the diabetic range altogether. That was a true miracle. All I did was follow the advice in this book. Dr. Bernstein tells the truth that many of us don't want to...
