You've made the right choice. I use Desitin in addition to chamois cream, applying a small amount of Desitin with a tissue before each ride in any areas where chafing is more likely to occur. I also apply to any razor burn areas to ward off any contamination.
I'm a long distance rider, typically riding 350-400 miles per week, and I use Desitin with almost superstitious devotion. Since I started using it, I've had zero saddle sores. It has improved my experience, and it'll improve yours too.
