christopher clayton: I will give this informative book 5 stars provided someone can explain to me the following statement in the book bottom two lines p106 "Combine one part nitrogen materials with 3 parts carbon materials to achieve the 30:1 carbon to nitrogen ratio." on page 108 there is a list of Carbon ingredients for example Newspaper 200 to 800:1 C to N ratio and helpfully Nitrogen rich materials for example rotted manure 20 to 50 :1 C to N ratio. The statement would imply you add 3 parts by volume paper to one part by volume manure. This seems to me to be the opposite way round to good practice. Surely you should be using 3 parts N rich to 1 part C rich which is what I tend to do practically. Otherwise the book makes perfect sense. Further note. The ratios seem to be determined by whether you add say a loose forkful of leaves, which occupies a lot of volume to a pressed down and shredded quantity of leaves which occupies far less for a lot more in quantity. This if the case should really be pointed out. Clearly the ratios would change dramatically.

J. Edgar Mihelic, MA, MA, MBA: In a review, the reader tries to create a sense of the book; the task is to boil down the essence of the work and to summarize and give opinion about the quality of the object in a very subjective manner. I am making a project of finding that essence in the most constrained manner possible. Here, I present you with a haiku review. I hope you like the review and take under consideration a purchase of the work.

Thanks to this book I
have a thriving pile of
compost right out back.

Kevin B. Reynolds: I am not a gardener but my wife goes a little nuts with her plants, trees, vegetables, flowers and more and, we have a lot of leaves to take care of and, we re-cycle fairly vigorously so... I bought this book as a starter since it will be I who will build the bins. I have come to rely on the "For Dummies" series as they are a great way to get started with a lot of things and this one is no exception. All you need to know and all you didn't even know you needed to know is in this book. If you're new to composting, this is the book for you. Recommended.

JoeInTampa: I am not a huge fan of the "Dummies" books, but this one is excellent. It provides lots of information about composting and clearly shows where you can just get the basics and skip all the background. For those who want to know more than the basics, more in-depth material is very clear. The author is an experienced gardener and composter who understands the different needs for successful composting in climates varying from the upper midwest to the arid deserts of Arizona. Highly recommended for those looking to get started composting kitchen scraps and lawn and garden cuttings.
