MP220MP220: I looked into getting the Akorn Jr. after buying the twin to the full-sized Akorn Grill, the Expert Grill Kamado, and making great meals with it. I wanted to have a portable kamado for picnics, camping, and cookouts at family and friends' houses. I will start by saying the experience in terms of food quality and flavor is just as good, if not better, than the full size Akorn. The insulation is just as good as the full-sized version but the thermal mass is reduced, so even less fuel is needed. I've smoked ribs (required splitting the rack) and chicken (can fit 4 large leg quarters easily) with minimal charcoal use and delicious results, and have had success with Kingsford professional as well as B&B lump. The smoking stone JR is a must, and is what makes the Akorn series so versatile and differentiates it from the competition. The downsides were poor build quality as others had mentioned. The rivnuts holding in the handle were misaligned, requiring the screws to go in at a steep angle with a standard screwdriver. jr: I promise after you sample your first meal from the Akorn, you'll be wondering how and when did anyone ever convince you that propane had anything remotely to do with BBQ!!
Kick that propane bbq to the curb and rediscover that original BBQ flavor we had before being hypnotized that somehow propane was to BBQ. I can't believe the years I've wasted doing fake gas BBQ.
The lid on the Akorn has an actual gasket and latch that seals air tight. With the 2 high quality air vents, one up top and the other on the bottom, you control the air which means you can control the temperature. Not like the old days when all you could do was move the grill up and down to control the heat, they were wide open to the air so they burned uncontrollable and hot.
The lump charcoal you get to use in the Akorn comes from many different sources, this enables you to further refine your BBQ skills. Change the flavor by choosing a charcoal made from different base wood. Choose a charcoal that burns at different temperatures. The varieties are incredible. Toss in a hickory or oak wood chunk(not chips) shortly before putting the food on. Wow! The flavor is incredible folks.

Joe G.: I already have one of those big 300lb beasts of a kamado cooker and wanted something easier to fire up and clean for a quick 2 person dinner or a few burgers and this seems to fit the bill. There are similar all ceramic mini-eggs out there, but they are pricey with smaller cooking surfaces and super heavy. This hits the sweet spot of affordability, larger cooking area and easy to move around without pulling something.

POSITIVES
One of the best features of this unit is the removeable ashpan. The combination of the middle hanger and the 2 quick release clips on the edges make it easy to clean and prevent the pan from accidentally falling off when you release the clips. You'll need to spin the pan a 1/4 turn to pull it out from the front since the legs get in the way of the handles, but its really easy once you figure it out. Great design, although this could also be an area for air leakage if the seal is poor, but I'm mainly using for open grilling so not as much of a concern for me.

Grill looks great once assembled. Its a darker shade of red than pictured but I like it. The legs make it easy for casual cooking near a seating area at ground level. I consider this...

Marion TMarion T: I did the research and suggested this BBQ to my husband. We needed something that was good quality with fantastic bbq taste and this certainly met our expectations! We've had both natural gas and propane BBQs in the past, sold each when we moved long distance, bought this one after considering the pricy, heavy, bulky, full sized ceramic cookers that are becoming popular. I was skeptical about this one in every way and so was my husband. We had no problems assembling it. We've used it to cook hamburgers, chicken breast, pork loin and we can't get over the amazing results and the wood smoked natural flavour. We bought wood charcoal from Home Depot in a BIG bag for under $20. (Canadian Tire also has the same big bag for about the same price) You use about as much as you can scoop up in 2 hands and maybe burn only 1/3 of it for each meal. When buying the wood charcoal feel the bag to make sure the chips aren't tiny because they might fall thru the grill. You can always break the big pieces, if you need to.
We bought an electric charcoal starter from Amazon which takes about 5 min to start the chips glowing a bit, then after removing it another 5 minutes to close the lid and heat...
