Brenda: Every moving story

Gmafluffy: This story is a gift. Her memoir tells a true life struggle with many good times mixed in. Surrounded by many people that would encourage Duckworth, she sets many goals and works her way through them all. Her amazing strength and tenacity, both physically and emotionally, pulls her through the shoot down and takes her to her current position as a US senator. This is a well written memoir that reads as if you are having coffee with this amazing lady.

Vivien G.: Even as a Canadian, I greatly enjoyed this memoir about a true American hero who, against all odds, keeps on giving to the country she loves!

Teachernut: Okay. Don’t judge me by this, but I was listening to Al Franken’s podcast a few weeks ago and he was interviewing a congresswoman about her book. The whole time I was listening to the conversation, I was picturing Katie Porter in my mind, even though he had mentioned her name was Tammy Duckworth. I absolutely loved the interview and when I got home I put the book in my Amazon cart. When it arrived a couple of days later, I was really surprised when it wasn’t Katie Porter on the cover.I really didn’t know who Tammy Duckworth was! Am I glad I do now! One of my favorite genres is memoir, and hers is one of the best I have ever read. For other dummies like me who aren’t familiar with her, She is an Iraq war veteran who is currently a highly respected senator from Illinois. Her story totally touched my heart and I will remember it forever. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

Dollrsavr: I thought I was buying this book to be uplifted but instead I was swept into a well written journey of what it was like to be a poor young girl finding her way thru a tough life. I kept thinking that my life was tough but Tammy had me beat. Her story made me better understand the Reserves and National Guard which was well written and gave me a deeper respect for those branches of the service. I cried when she was shot down and lost her legs. I remember when that happened on the news. The book was a gripping story of survival. I am going to share this book with my adult daughter who is about the same age as Tammy. My daughter had a disabling stroke at 28 years old and has been a key volunteer fundraising for Veteran families of the National Guard. I was glad to have an opportunity to read about Tammy Duckworth. I wish her well and hope she doesn't get lost in the climb for political power.

Nelda: Any time I read a book in just a few days' time, it must be good! It's a sometimes harrowing rags-to-riches story, beginning with her childhood in Cambodia, Thailand, Hawaii, and mainland USA. Her experiences with poverty, racism, refugees, food stamps, and inadequate housing influenced her world view and later politics. Eventually, her family turns their lives around through hard work...hours upon hours of low-paying hard work. Her learned stoicism and perseverance from childhood leads her to a PhD and job as helicopter pilot in the military. Her chopper is shot down with life-changing consequences for her and her family. Eventually, she works with veterans and becomes a senator from Illinois where she can hopefully make a difference. That's where she is now. The book itself is well-written, well-paced, and a page turner. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in another facet of the great American story.
