tony giorgianni: This book has a little bit of everything you need to know about dementia and Alzheimer’s. Short to the point chapters. With great real life examples and experiences. It was my first purchase when my mom was diagnosed. Great beginning book. Easy to read and understand.

K. J. Bute: The best around at present covering just about everything. It is not a book to be read from cover to cover in one sitting but rather to dip into as necessary and so always relevant.

Val Purcell: I bought the UK edition about 10 years ago and wanted a newer version as much of the legislation has changed. Unfortunately this edition is American and so does not deal with many of the practical issues that I was hoping to find answers for. Still an invaluable guide, but I hadn't realised that it was a US edition and therefore not so relevant to my needs.

Suz in Florida: Undoubtedly one of the most user friendly books about dementia and alzheimer's disease being published. It has been around for a number of editions and just keeps on being more informative. Taking care of a dementia or alzheimer's individual can be a very taxing job. If you are not working and do the caregiving full time is one thing but if you work full time and have to come home to someone in need of assistance it can be totally overwhelming. This book gives you information, ideas and support during this period for not only your life but the one you are taking care of. You can't do it all on your own and The 36 Hour Day helps you not only realize this but gives you basic information, addresses and organizations to help you and your loved one cope. I used this book while taking care of my mother for four years and have now had to purchase the new 4th edition for my life partner who has been diagnosised with this emotionally charged disease. If you buy no other book on the subject, please believe me when I say that this is the one book you will find most helpful. And, remember take time for yourself - it's the most important thing you can do for yourself. The alzheimer's patient...

paula kay: I have been a practicing R.N. for 27 years in the field of geriatric psychiatry. This book has been required reading for my employees and the book I have recommended most often to care providers. Not just caregivers but care providers, those who are responsible for the provision of care. It is in it's 4th edition and I'm hoping for a 5th soon. My one bit of advice is to look at the table of contents and read the chapters as the situations arise. To open it up and read it from cover to cover can be a little overwhelming. Not everyone faces every issue. Also, please make sure that your loved one is correctly diagnosed, make an appointment with a physician who is board certified in geropsychiatry. Please do not take the word of a primary care provider, they can be sincere but wrong. You can't take that chance. Depression can mimic Alzheimer's and if it is not treated and cured the dementia can become permanent. Many dementias are not familial or inherited, don't let your family worry about getting a disease that your loved one may not even have. Contact the Memory and Aging Project for excellent information or your local Alzheimer's and other Associated Dementias Association's...
