JW Powell: Another fun and insightful book from Bill Bryson. His books are so easy to read. I like the way he mixes story-telling, whimsical narratives, and real, hard science and history. It's a superb balance that keeps his books fun and interesting to read.

Paul: I read this several years ago but mislaid my copy. So I bought it again and have just re-read it. If you like popular science then do read this. Bryson takes us on a journey through science and discovery and does so with wit and the right level of depth. Simply wonderful.

Steptoe Holmes: This eloquent and highly entertaining book presents a sweeping narrative of the nature of the universe and human progress in understanding it. I greatly enjoyed the vignettes of the often-quirky personalities and turbulent lives of many of the scientists mentioned. This book published in 2003, still retains fascinating relevance, but I hope that it will be updated to capture scientific advances in the past two decades. A Short History of Nearly Everything should be in every school library.

Kai Lee: From the author’s introduction, one can deduce that, when he was growing up, he was convinced that science was supremely dull. This was due to his disappointment with the science books he studied, which failed to answer fundamental questions such as “How did we end up with a Sun in the middle of our planet? And if it is burning away down there why isn’t the ground under our feet hot to the touch?” This disappointment may be why he became an author/journalist rather than a scientist. However, about four or five years before he was writing the present book (probably in his mid-forties), on a long flight across the pacific, he became keenly aware of his lack of knowledge about science in general and our planet. He felt this to be unacceptable and decided to remedy the situation by devoting a portion of his life (three years it turned out) reading books and journals and finding experts who were willing to answer a lot of his outstandingly dumb questions about various fields of science. He succeeded in understanding and appreciating the wonder and accomplishments of science at a level that isn’t too technical or demanding but also isn’t entirely superficial. He was able to...

Christian Dechery: For lovers of non-fiction this is good as it gets. Amazingly gripping storytelling with a content range you can’t possibly fathom comes all from a single person. Yet it does.
The way the author delivers stories, science facts and his own input as food for thought is just remarkable. Delicious reading from page one to last. This is how good it is.
