Sarah P Temple: Nice substantial door knob. I never thought to think twice over the standard door knob until I felt the weight of this knob uninstalled. Easy to install with no surprises over any other knob I have installed. After installation it only feels that much better and provides a great solid and satisfying feel for both opening and closing of the door. Fits the styling of my older home and sure to provide many years of service over the cheaper options out there. Amazon also offers a pretty substantial savings over that other big box stores where these are available. I will continue to purchase these when replacing other knobs in the future.

dsk: The entry knob is extremely heavy and well made. It's very nice looking. We installed a new entry door which had a Schlage entry knob and deadbolt. This lock set weighs twice as much and is very solid. But, while installing the knob, we realized that the bolts that secure the lockset were missing from the package. Rather than return the knob to Amazon, I called Baldwin customer service The CS representative pulled the required bolts and packaged them for us before the end of the phone call. You can't get better customer service than that!

***UPDATE***

The bolts came in 2 days. The knob and matching deadbolt look perfect on my new door with oval glass, and it fits the era of my 1920 house. More importantly, the hardware is very, very high quality. I easily rekeyed the knob so that we could use the same key with the entry knob and deadbolt.

T: I have owned two of these entry knobs. Due to user error, the first only lasted about six months. I locked myself out, and the locksmith ended up destroying the lock to regain entry. Surprisingly, I could still lock the door from the inside just fine even though I could no longer use a key. I cannot speak to that locksmiths skills because I had not needed one to enter a home before and me and a neighbor found his number at random, but I am now more confident that someone in a hurry to break in through the door might give up on this lock after we watched him try to pry the door open, slip a credit card-like device between the door and pick the lock with no success. So I replaced that entry knob with one of the same. Since I wanted to replace the entry knob right away, I went to a nearby hardware store where it cost me $15 more than it would have through Amazon.

Other things I like about it are ease of installation and how smoothly the lock works. I can't jiggle the knob up and down, and I don't need to jiggle the key to get the lock to work. It feels well-built. It has a nice-looking, smooth finish that also feels good in the hand to me. The only complaint I have with the...

Dave P.: My house was built in the early 1940s, and some of the beautiful old brass door knobs that were original to the home were worn out and no longer working. I decided to replace all of the knobs with a knob that had a older look to them. I decided on these Baldwin knobs and I could not be happier with my choice. The dark oil-rubbed bronze finish has a timeless look, that fits well with an older house, but would probably look good in a modern space too. The knobs are incredibly hefty, and the mechanism turns precisely and has a very solid feel to it. Installation was quick and easy. (I did have to re-drill the knob openings in all of my doors because the older knobs were much smaller, but Baldwin provided a template, and it was a very simple process after the first one). I know, I'm gushing about a doorknob, but this is just an awesome, awesome doorknob. Expensive yes. But absolutely worth it.

Mariano E. Tan: This doorknob is nicely made and matches other Baldwin Venetian Bronze hardware nicely except for one thing. The SmartKey system, uses a KW1 (Kwikset) keyway. That means that if you have other existing residential Baldwin locks, which generally use a SC1 (Schlage) keyway, you'll end up with two keys to operate all of your locks. Apart from that, this is nice hardware, solidly made and the SmartKey system is quite convenient and as secure as a conventional five pin lockset.

If you want to get a keyway match for other Baldwin locks, the Schlage SecureKey system offers consumer settable rekeying using the SC1 keyway. Baldwin doesn't use that system probably because they're owned Black and Decker which also owns Kwikset.

In general, you can mix SmartKey (Baldwin or Kwikset), Kwikset and Weiser locks, OR Baldwin SC1 (non SmartKey), Schlage and Dexter locks, but if you cross over, you're carrying an extra key. Bottom line is, check your keyway before you add locks to verify that the new locks can use the same key blanks as the existing. There are many more types of keyways than I've listed above, even within the various brands noted.
