If you add seasonings, a little olive oil, and a little balsamic vinegar you can make a decent tomato sauce for pasta. But if you don't have those ingredients already doing an emergency situation, tomato powder by itself won't taste good on anything.

Cat Martin: My first use was to fry up a pound of hamburger that I needed to use and decided to make skillet spaghetti. I drained the grease once the meat was cooked, added dried onion and garlic, Italian seasonings, water, several spoonfuls of the tomato powder, mixed it well and as soon as the water/tomato sauce began to bubble, I added a handful of spaghetti noodles, turned the heat down and let it simmer on very low heat until the noodles were done. I tasted it a couple of times and needed to add salt and pepper and quite a bit more basil, but it was good. Second time I made tomato soup and did something similar - I happen to have a couple of roasted red peppers left in a jar in the fridge so I mashed them up and added to the water/powdered tomato soup mix and then I chopped up a couple of leaves from my small basil plant and dumped them in for some added flavor. I guess the tomato power needs to be bland so it can be added and expanded on based on how it is going to be used? Other than that, I'm happy to have it on hand for when I realize I'm out of canned stewed tomatos and paste tomatos.

Precise Disarray: Buy what you can, when you can. Of all the emergency branded supplies I have, tomato powder is one my must have products. It has good nutrients and can be used for so many applications and takes up little space. I buy when on sale, and I also buy non emergency packed tomato powders as I really like it that much. One note about tomato powders- they tend to clump. All freeze dried tomato products that aren't loaded with preservatives and anti-caking agents will have clumped balls. This does not make it a bad product or an unusable product. It will dissolve in liquid. It is not an issue. I mention this because I see others mentioning it as a bad thing. It is really not a thing, at all. Oxygen absorber may not do a darn thing. Really, it isnt an issue to spend energy over. But, when I go to open this can, I will likely portion the contents into smaller mylar pouches or vac seal in a mason jar as the large #10 (number ten) will take awhile to work through. Little goes a long way.
I like Augason Farms, I buy from them regularly. I tend to watch for sales as I am really just fleshing out my long term pantry rather than relying on it. I try to buy a few extra goods every time I am...

Kevin Wrinn: Not a food prepper/doomsday planner or anything, was just looking for easier, cheaper ways to make certain dishes with a good shelf life and I use tomatoes a lot. So far I've made tomato bisque, marinara, and several curries that require tomato paste. This doesn't taste stale in any way, just nice, fresh tomato flavor. It is slightly sweet, though on the medium side of acidity, so it won't replace low-acidity applications where something like a san marzano is needed, but I wasn't expecting that. I will still grab a can of diced tomatoes when I want texture to a sauce, but it does replace all the cans of tomato sauce and paste really well, and uses way less pantry space.
