Janet Plakatoris: My greatgrandson loves this book. It's the first thing he goes for when he visits. I highly recommend it.

My question is, why did I pay $26 for the copy I bought for a friend when the cover price is $14.99?

SLiM: The illustrations are great. However, I wasn't thrilled with the letter-item correlation. For example, B is for Bulldozer, and the picture is of a front-end loader, not a bulldozer (a bulldozer has tracks, not wheels). Its confusing for the kids, not just picky moms. My son refuses to call that picture a "Bulldozer." He's 2.5 years old and not overly obsessed with equipment, he just knows the difference. The author should have as well.
Then there A is for Airplane, but the illustration is actually a fighter-jet type plane, which my son calls a Jet, not an Airplane. And so when you get to J, you get an exciting Jack-o-lantern (instead of a Jet obviously), which my son of course calls a Pumpkin, for the letter P.
The artwork is well done, my son enjoys looking at it occasionally, but the overall book fell short.

Memier: I think people need to get over that the title says boys and enjoy the book for what it really does. I bought this for a boy (uh oh, I said boy) I nanny, who was a year and a half when I bought it. First of all, he’s obsessed with airplanes (his sister is not) which was my first reason for purchasing. I keep the book out of sight because he will rip the pages, but when I take it out it becomes a special moment to sit and read this book together. We go through each page, and I ask a series of questions: “what do you see?” Sometimes he knows (I.e. airplane) and sometimes he doesn’t, but he learns the names of the pictures slowly but surely. I also ask “where is H?” “Where is I?” And he’ll point. There’s a 50/50 chance to get it right as each letter takes up one full page so I feel like this helps build his confidence. Lastly, he loves when I take his pointer finger and slowly sing through the list of ABCs on the last page. Then, we read the book at least two more times! His language and knowledge of the alphabet has improved so much with the help of this sweet book.
