I bought an itouchless garbage can and it came with one of these carbon filters. I really didn't think much of the filter since I've had garbage cans with swing lids and not used filters.
I had the can for about 6 months when I noticed that it started to really stink. When I removed the carbon filter it reeked so I guess it was absorbing a lot of smells. I tossed it out and ordered some replacements to see if it would help. While waiting for the filters, I found that the trash still smelled so it wasn't just that the filter was holding onto odor and that's what I was smelling. Haven't had issues since I installed new filters and figure each one lasts about 4-5 months.
