Stumpkiller: We live in a 35 year old log home and have a constant battle with carpenter ants and bees. I spliced in replacement wood in a problem corner and have been using this to seal the gaps. Also as a pre-filler in cracks where the logs have split before caulking. Two tips I recommend are get a package of bamboo skewers if you plan on using the can in small jobs over time. Clean out the tube with a skewer before the next use. I can around get eight uses over two weeks per can.

Second, for a larger hole, stuff in copper mesh first. That will give it some support and help prevent mouse intrusion . . . or at least hopefully discourage them.

The uncured foam is impossible to wash off so tape the areas you don't want covered and be careful with the nozzle as it expands. It does trim up well when hardened with a serrated bread knife. And it does take wood stain.

Buster Brown: Got this to fill in some voids around holes cut into base plate of house just above foundation used to run inlet and outlet PVC pipes for condensing furnace as well as the lines from the outdoor AC unit. Having learned the hard way in using expanding foam in the past and having it create a mess due to the extent it expands and it's glue like stickiness, I took care not to overfill gaps and wised up and used surgical gloves. This doesn't expand about 10x as some others do by the time they finally set, which is good. But for anything but large voids, you can't avoid it expanding further than flush. If it matters, the excess can be safely carved off with a knife or saw. It's a one use can, as the product will likely harden in the valve and render it useless after time has passed. So I looked around for other voids I might fill and found some in the area where ducts entered the chimney.
In general, this stuff is very good for filling voids where sealing and insulation are required. Only real downside is as I mentioned, that it's pretty much a one use can and unless you have a lot to fill, will likely end up wasting a lot of it.

PublicNameIsFrank: Doesn't really block anything but bugs in my experience. Only slows down other pests who are able to dig, push, or rip through it. Trust me on this... You're going to need steel wool or some other metal mesh where they're getting in and then spray the foam over it.... that's if you want to block anything mammalian. If you can rip the foam easily barehanded just picture what a burrowing animals claws can do. Now realize they were probably born in / around the place you're trying to exclude them from... They believe your home, barn, or garage is actually their residence and you're just the giant loud predator who shows up making noise occassionally and then leaves. You think if they avoid cats, hawks, owls, and foxes they care you and your foam are standing there pantsless at 6am? If you're reading this I know you're wondering if there is some sort of cheap way out of this situation... maybe even sans pesticides... I've yet to find it. This is product should be used like you'd use a shower curtain to keep water off the floor... it will discourage pests and it will create less avenues for them to escape to while you're banging on a lobster pot, in your underwear, on Sunday night...

Amazon Customer: Definitely easier to use than steel wool or copper mesh for blocking small (less than 1 inch) mouse holes. That being said, DO NOT ASSUME blocking the holes will resolve an infestation, or you'll be reporting what a lot of people here are -- determined mice ate through it in no time. Here's what you do to put an end to the problem once and for all;

(1) Don't clean up mouse droppings. These are "hotspots" and the mice will return to them if they're left untouched.
(2) Get some poison blocks (I like "Havoc XT") and three inch wood screws (you might need some washers).
(3) Put three Havoc XT cubes on a woodscrew and secure it in to the floor/wall (whatever) where the dropping are.
(4) Replace the cubes once a week until the mice stop feeding; it may take up to a month. In bad spots, you might need to put 2x or 3x poison.
(5) Search the area around your hotspots for entry points... plumbing pipes/drains are a major culprit, but I've seen bad/amateur electrical work on exterior walls that punched right in to the vent space.
(6) Fill holes/gaps *generously* (push the applicator straw in to the hole, spray for 2-3s, then continue spraying while slowly withdrawing....
