12-Color Speedball Underglaze Ink Set for Creative Projects

B: The underglazes are great. Alot of different colors. After firing they keep their color. I put them on greenware, then bisque at 04. They hold their color following the Cone 5 firing.

MaraMara: Bought them for my college class that fires at cone 10, really expecting the colors to turn out dull, but was pleasantly surprised by how bright and vibrant it turned out! Only issue is that orange and especially brown are very chunky and difficult to use. (For the image: my college doesn’t have a completely clear glaze)

JLeigh: I’m hoping somebody has a recommendation but most of these arrived very watery and gritty if you know what I mean. Like they weren’t well mixed. Shaking doesn’t do anything either, it’s as though they have separated. When I paint them on there are little grains. Only one came out a smooth consistency. The only thing that has somewhat worked is to water them down further and really mix in the water with my brush. I prefer my other brand of underglazes to this.

S.D.: At first they seem fine but then they quickly turn to a very grainy mixture which, even with water, seems difficult to paint with.

Joe Dowling: I've been using speedball underglazes for some time now and usually am pretty pleased. All colors arrived but brown was not as full as other colors. I always have issues with the brown underglaze as well. Its grainy and doesn't look nice. I haven't had an issue with red before but when I used it from this pack, it moved a lot on my clay after firing and didn't stay in place. This is not a common issue that I experience so I was surprised and disappointed. Overall I still like speedball but some colors need work.

Peace Hope Joy to YouPeace Hope Joy to You: The media could not be loaded.  My 4 star rating comes with a huge caveat: DO NOT PURCHASE AND HAVE DELIVERED IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES!!!! Several of the glazes in this set clumped! (See photo and video). I ordered them during winter, but did not use them for a few months. Would have returned them, but too much time had passed.

That being said, the ones that didn't clump are really bright and pretty, both as a softer matte without a clear glaze over, and bold and glossy with the clear (sold separately) over. I have purchased several other colors during warmer months and have had no problems, and really love using these underglazes!

Amazon Customer: These were all separated from sitting. I shook them all for quite sometime and all of them except about 3 blended together nicely. Will probably be able to blend the others better by dumping out and blending or something. Otherwise they are fine.

Greyhound Cleyhounds: I had really hoped these would be good. There had been good reviews on them and the price was affordable. The wide assortment of colors made this an attractive purchase. Sadly, some of the colors are like grit, and adding water and shaking does not seem to help. It is like trying to glaze with toothpaste! The brown was the worst. I wonder if this is normal for this product or did I get an old, or somehow damaged set? At any rate it has been frustrating trying to use them. And seems like a waste of money, too. I wish I had not bought them. NOTE: I contacted the Speedball company. The glaze may have accidentally froze before I received. They replaced the ruined colors. I was happy with their customer service.

JulsN: These seem to work well, the colours emerge bright after clear glaze applied and fired. I am not keen on some of the original colours, but had intended to mix them anyway to achieve the colours I want. As easy to apply to greenware or after biscuit firing, just like painting with watercolours. Delivery took a while as they come from USA, but mine arrived 5 days before the predicted delivery date, so that was good. Would buy again, though as I tend to make quite small pots and objects, the sample sizes will last me a long time.
