Dehydrated Apple Slices by Augason Farms - Perfect for Snacks & Baking!

WTRGS: It's hard to find crunchy dehydrated apples that are not freeze dried. Freeze dried fruits are unnatural in texture and flavor. These remind me of Weight Watchers dehydrated apples in the small packages that were super expensive. The crunchy texture is wonderful! The quantity for the price is excellent. The taste is good (though a little off from what I'm used to). I would definitely buy them again and recommend them to anyone looking for crunchy dehydrated apples.

Eric Bethard: These are simply freeze-dried slices of apples. Very similar to what you would buy in the snack section of the grocery store. They come in a #10 can, which refers to the size of the can (approximately 1 gallon) and NOT to the amount of food in the can. For that, just refer to the net weight of the product. I haven't opened this particular can yet, but I'm assuming it's like other cans that I've opened in the past. There will be some space that isn't occupied by freeze-dried apple slices, which is to be expected.

Most of these freeze-dried food companies will use a single size can for a wide variety of products. Much cheaper for them. They don't have to buy different machines for different sizes of cans, they don't have to have line switch-over time to change can size, etc. So, the result is that not each can will be packed full of whatever product. The cost is mostly in the food itself, so if you wanted everything to be brimming over with the food, the price would be a lot higher.

Anyway, the apples taste good and store well. I rotate my cans out of storage and in to use whenever I find them on sale. That way, the storage cans are always...

John g: Great way for preppers to get some vital micronutrients and variety in an otherwise salty diet. Flavor is subtle but clean and fresh with a slight snap and chew to the texture. I ate one...then 2 more, then a handful. The "Combos Effect" in action. Stuck the can in the freezer for extended freshness while snacking. Pick them up on sale, under $15 a can is a good price. No dents, love the brand colors and design. Great company.

AC: I like dehydrated apple, having consumed them on and off since youth. These are very dry, not much moisture in them. They are a bit insubstantial as direct snacking chips - usually you'd want them a bit thicker and larger - but I find these to be satisfactory. I have a couple handfuls as a snack here and there, and they are pretty good. I can't comment on long-term storage, as I haven't tried that.

However, I did re-hydrate some - I boiled three-ish cups of water, poured it into a four-cup Pyrex measuring cup, and then added one cup of dehydrated apples and let it sit for a good 30 minutes. I then added them to some dough for oatmeal cookies. They aren't like fresh apples but the cookies came out great, probably better than if I had used fresh, since these are so thin. They added some chewy apple-bits which conferred the correct flavor but were neither too tough nor soft to disrupt the rest of the cookie's consistency.

So if you just want some mild apple snacks, good choice. If you want traditional apple chips, I'd recommend going with a different brand. If you are thinking about using these for baking, I would definitely recommend them.

Diane Morrow: Apple chip have a very mild faint flavor for the most part. Some of the pieces have a stronger apple flavor but most don't. I did try to rehydrate some and they did not taste very good so I just eat them as they are, I like them better that way. I have bought these several times and they have been consistant.
