Ms. LuLu: I was tasked with this read for a humanities literature class and I must say that it was worth the suggested read. Machado's fresh take on literary style and perspective were a welcomed breeze. His twisted and dark humor gave a sense of relevance to how so many view the world and everyday scenarios. Forcing you to think once, twice, three times about the words before you. I absolutely loved it all

Miehle: Ein faszinierendes Buch. Ganz klare Kaufempfehlung.

Choudhary Ali Zia Kabir: Reading in 2021, when the humanity has experienced holocaust, nuclear wars, Iranian revolution, abject inequalities, ISIS, Aung San Suu Kyis, Donald Trumps, post truth politics, COVID-19, et al., the book is certainly not that bizarre, not that witty as claimed. But an easy read, still somewhat fresh in certain angles.

Edward De Vere: Written in 1881, this Brazilian "posthumous" novel is written by a very lively corpse whose stunted political ambitions, amorous love affairs, and railings at the stupidities of humans, including himself, make for a witty, quick paced "memoir"/obituary of a book. Like nothing you've ever read, Machado de Assis pokes at the reader's reactions, anticipates his critics' attacks, and spins you along his passions and griefs, humors and overindulgences. This is a modern novel, way ahead of its time, a classic! Although a crackpot philosopher takes up too many words yammering about his nutty ideas toward the end of the book, I have no other complaints. Terrific!

TS Lloyd: If you want to get a great read on 10th Century humor, this book is a bomb.
But don't expect laugh out loud jokes.
