Oliver: Recognition only works for specific fonts and sizes, and is inaccurate when it's not black font on white pages. I can see it being useful for language learners in a controlled setting, but it definitely can't be carried around to help recognize product labels.

Cindy: I've been using this device for several months, it’s good in general, but unfortunately it doesn’t recognize the handwriting and copperplate. It greatly limits the scope of its use. And another problem is when you‘re scanning only one word, it’s hard to scan that word accurately, it always scan extra letters close to the word you want to scan, I have to try a lot of times to make it work, that makes me frustrated!

lotuslotus: If you want to use it as a Chinese or English learning support, go ahead and buy the normal version. It will fulfill all your needs. I paid nearly $100 more for it’s pro version, hoping I could learn some Korean and Japanese. The result is absolutely ridiculous… In the first picture, the word means “yellow” and it gives me a translation of “Kelly” (because they have similar pronunciation). Second picture shows a “lion” and it was translated to “local accent”. Third picture, a dog was translated to “circle” and “I love it” was “cabbage”. I have a intermediate level of Japanese and I have no idea where on earth those translations come from. Although I don’t know Korean, my friend who learns Korean told me the meaning were absurd as well…I would say this product almost never translates correctly on those languages. The description says it has plenty of professional dictionaries which is not true at all!! Horrible experience and I hope I could return it.

JPDS: My plan was to use this pen to help me in my Chinese learning. I made a mistake thinking that I can connect this Youdao pen to my handphone or computer wirelessly so I can transfer what I scan for review later on. But after 1 hour trying to figure out how to find and install the Android app, I came to the conclusion that the app is not available for users in the US (to their credit, they did put a note on that albeit not directly stated).
I can connect the pen to my computer using a USB cable, find the folder, and open the file where I save my scanned text. It is just not that convenient.
So the bottom line is:
- If you just want to translate books, magazines etc. from Chinese to English, this pen works fine. It reads out loud the translation too.
- If you just need to translate labels, instructions etc. occasionally, just use your smartphone.
- If you plan to use this as a tool to help your study, you probably want to save your scan for review later. In that case the pen usage may not be convenient enough as I've described above.

Another mistake I made is I went for the top-of-the-line Pro 3 because I'm planning to learn Japanese too. If you just want to...
